SPL's "In the Garden" group will hit the road to explore nature in person this coming week! Join the first field trip to DeFries Gardens, 17477 CR 46, just outside of New Paris. It is truly a remarkable sight, featuring a calendar garden. "In the Garden" will meet at 11 a.m. next Thursday, June 16, in DeFries Gardens. Bring a lunch if you like. During this field trip, attendees will explore the gardens before finding some shade discuss natural elements seen in the gardens. After DeFries Gardens, unless the humidity is too high, the group will go to the nearby Benton Hydro and walk in the woods sometime after noon. Check out copies of In the Garden's reference book, Nature's Best Hope by Douglas W. Tallamy, while at the gardens. Let Becky Brower know if you can't attend and want a copy of the book; her email is [email protected]. The group will decide on field trip locations and times so that a July calendar will be created. Another Outdoor OpportunityFor those wanting to spend more time outdoors while helping the community, a volunteer opportunity exists! SPL has told the Syracure-Wawasee Trail that it will maintain a trail section along Main Street -- from the library to where the segment ends near Brook Pointe Resort. Trash pickup will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 22, or at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 29, (meet at the Syracuse Community Center) for those using the gator. Bring a pair of gloves and shoes to walk in.
